About Tauragė

Tauragė District Municipality – the greenest municipality in Lithuania – a phrase that has been widely used since 2015.

Tauragė District Municipality – the greenest municipality in Lithuania – a phrase that has been widely used since 2015.

The initiative to become the greenest quickly became one of Tauragė District Municipality’s priorities. This is reflected in its work – the district is home to one of the country’s largest wind farm parks, solar power plants cover the roofs of public institutions, and electric buses run on the streets. A remote solar photovoltaic power plant is being built in Tauragė District, which, once operational, is planned to use renewable energy resources to power all street lighting in the district. Heating system modernization is underway in Tauragė District Municipality administration buildings, replacing old inefficient heating boilers with modern and eco-friendly heating systems. Educational activities about wind energy are being carried out right next to Tauragė – activities that help reveal our region’s identity and the vision of the greenest city in Lithuania, educate about environmental conservation, and provide an engaging introduction to wind energy, the operating principles of wind turbines, while involving communities in educational activities and encouraging their entrepreneurship.

Tauragė has been recognized multiple times for its environmentally friendly initiatives and projects:

2020 Tauragė District Municipality was awarded two “Golden Krivūlė” statuettes: the European Commission Representation in Lithuania’s award “For Green District Ambitions” and the Ministry of Transport’s award “For Environmental Friendliness and Promotion of Sustainable Mobility”.

2021 Tauragė District Municipality was declared the winner in the “Greenest Municipality” category of the “Towards Green Transport” competition for sustainable logistics solutions and initiatives organized by the International Transport Innovation Forum.

In 2023, Tauragė District Municipality was awarded two “Golden Krivūlės”. The first – for the implemented project “Tauragė – Lithuania’s Capital of Culture 2023”, the second – “For Close Partnership with Business and Setting an Example in the Field of Green Energy”.

Climate-Neutral Municipality

In 2022, Tauragė took another firm step towards implementing its green course – Tauragė District Municipality was selected for the European Commission’s experimental innovation program “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 Mission” (more – Cities Mission).

Tauragė District Municipality’s participation in the Cities Mission means that Tauragė aims to become a climate-neutral municipality and lead the way for other cities by example. Although Tauragė is one of the smallest cities participating in the Cities Mission, Tauragė’s example is very important – cities with up to 50,000 inhabitants make up ⅓ of Lithuania’s and the EU’s population, so without the example of cities like Tauragė, Europe will not become a climate-neutral continent. This is reflected in one of our slogans:

“Perhaps we are too small to change the world, but we are big enough to set an example”
